Labs Have The Top Gear, So Demand A Top Job

"When having you film processed you expect the best quality results every time, but do you get it?"

That's the question posed by Geoff Fernance of True Living Colour in West Gosford Shopping Centre.

Photo processing laboratories have the equipment to achieve top quality results, so it's important to demand a high standard, Mr Fernance said.

"Even if you're not the best photographer in the world, don't be afraid to ask for help," he said.

"Every photo processing outlet should have a staff member qualified to give photographic advice.

"A few simple tips can turn mediocre images into photographs to be proud of.

"Too many customers pick up their photos only to be disappointed with the results.

"They usually believe they are poor photographers, when in reality it may be just poor photo finishing.

"Don't go for the cheapest processing or the most expensive, go for quality."

Mr Fernance advised people planning to purchase a digital camera to do thorough research.

While the cameras are continually coming down in cost, there were other considerations, he said.

These include the cost or memory cards and rechargeable battery packs.

Digital images can also take up a lot of computer.

Prints from digital files cost more than prints from film, he said.

"Also, when shooting digital images, the responsibility for colour and density correction falls upon your shoulders, and not the laboratory's," he said.

He also reminded people that a roll of film can be scanned and made into digital files by a mini-lab.

He said another consideration was that when photographers are travelling, they'll need a means of downloading their images.

He asks: "Do you really want to be carrying a laptop with you on your holiday?"
